Sodium silicate from rice husk / hull ash (RHA)

Today, rice is grown and harvested on every continent except Antarctica. The majority of all rice is produced in India, China, Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, Burma, and Bangladesh. Asian farmers’ accounts for 92-percent of the world's total rice production. More than 550 million tons of rice is produced annually around the globe.

20% of paddy is husk / hull. 110 million ton of husk is produced per year worldwide. Most of it is used as fuel. On relatively good combustion 80% of husk is consumed. Thus we have 22 million ton rice husk ash (RHA) generated per year.

Rice husk / hull ash (RHA) contains

  • Biogenic Amorphous Silica
  • Carbon
  • Un-burnt rice husk / hull

RHA generated in husk fired boiler poses a solid waste disposal problem. The ash is presently used as land fill.

Technology

Ash Reactor

The simple process involves treating the rice husk / hull ash (RHA) with a solution of alkali at relatively low temperature and low pressure. The silica reacts completely with the alkali solution forming liquid commercial silicate with suspended particles of carbon. The carbon is activated, dried & packed. The liquid commercial silicate is further processed or sold.
